Nearly thirty years ago, my friend Mark and I spent three months living in an eight-by-twelve log and debris shelter in the docile woods of northeastern Pennsylvania. We called it the hogan. Our objective was to study some of the primitive skills that our ancestors used to survive.

Come on a journey back in time… not that long ago, when life was simple, and optimism flourished. Visit the hogan and Gentlewoods. Join us as we learn about the wilderness, improve our connection to the land and our fellow earthly inhabitants… and philosophize our role in the human endeavor.

The hogan took more than a year to build. And we only stayed in it for three months. But that short sojourn set us on a course of spiritual, psychological, emotional, and social development that changed our lives.

Compiled from extensive journals, Summer in Gentlewoods weaves a web of stories, illuminates the bonds of friendship, and provides lessons about simplicity that seem necessary in today’s world.
